  4. ISP Investigating Fatal Shooting in Rural Harrison County

Harrison County – June 21, 2024:  Detectives and crime scene investigators with the Indiana State Police in Sellersburg are investigating a shooting that left two dead and one with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm.

Just after 6:00 Friday evening, Harrison County Officers and ISP Troopers responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence on the 3000 block of Mosquito Creek Road located in southern Harrison County near the town of Laconia.  When responding officers and emergency medical personnel arrived, they encountered 56-year-old Marion Young, who had been shot in the arm.  Young had run to a nearby residence to report the incident.  Marion Young was then transported to University Hospital in Louisville for non-life-threatening injuries.

Harrison County officers then attempted to make contact with any individuals located in the residence where the shooting occurred but received no response.  When officers cleared and checked the residence, they discovered a deceased man and woman lying outside the back door of the rural home. Investigators identified the deceased as 84-year-old Donald Ray Weaver and 82-year-old Virginia Y. Scofield, the mother of Marion Young.

ISP Detectives and crime scene technicians responded to the residence and University Hospital to investigate the incident.  Although the investigation is ongoing, Investigators believe Donald Weaver and Marion Young had a verbal argument earlier in the evening.  Young stepped outside the residence when Donald Weaver exited the house with a handgun and shot at Young, striking him in the arm.  After Young ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911, the investigation revealed more gunshots could be heard coming from the house.  Investigators believe that is when Weaver shot and killed Virginia Scofield, who stepped outside after the initial shots were fired.  Weaver then turned the gun on himself.

This investigation is ongoing.  Autopsies have been scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2024.  Harrison County Officers and the Harrison County Coroner’s Office assisted in the investigation.
